Sessions

• Resume review: You’ll upload your resume and receive feedback from your instructor. You’ll also observe other students receiving feedback, expanding your knowledge even more.
• Cover letter samples: You’ll receive multiple samples of cover letters, learning what essential information to cover and how to structure your own letters.
• Interview prep: You’ll learn how to research employers, how to craft questions that show you prepared for the interview, dress appropriately, follow proper etiquette, and write an effective thank-you letter.
• Networking guidance: You’ll be able to network with your peers in the module plus explore external networking opportunities and receive guidance on what to offer your professional contacts.

Criminal law and civil law have major differences in purpose, and those differences affect how each system functions. As such, criminal law requires a unique combination of procedural expertise and professional discernment.

In the Criminal Law module, build specialized knowledge to land roles in one of the most complex areas of legal practice:

• Foundations of criminal law and criminal procedure, including the elements required to prove basic criminal offenses
• The role of due process throughout the life of a case
• Governmental discovery obligations unique to criminal law
• Contemporary practices like restorative justice
• Federal rules of criminal procedure

• Burden of proof and limitations on criminal liability, and fundamental elements of crimes
• Crimes against person and property
• Driving under the influence
• Affirmative defenses

• Punishments, including the death penalty
• Sex offense registry
• Human trafficking with a focus on victim advocacy and protection

Sample Assignments and Case Studies

Your assignments and case studies will focus around the aspects of criminal law that law firms expect from trained paralegals. Sample assignments may include:

• Apply your research skills by reading and interpreting case law of self defense claims
• Analyze hypothetical cases to determine whether statements of defendants would be admitted at trial based on relevant case law
• Focus on a criminal law topic that is relevant to your career or interests

Older adults are one of the most rapidly expanding demographics—both in the United States and around the world. As one of the most vulnerable and fastest-growing populations, older adults need unique protections and legal support, so the field of elder law has expanded significantly in recent years.

In the Elder Law module, develop a strong, practice-oriented foundation in elder law, with an emphasis on:

• Identifying and addressing the complex legal needs of older adults
• Client interviewing, issue-spotting, and ethical considerations unique to older clients
• Analyzing how federal laws, state laws, and regulatory frameworks intersect
• Acknowledging how older adults access legal services differently from younger populations facing similar issues

The Elder Law module explores the following topics:

• Power of attorney
• Medicare, Medicaid and similar state programs
• Guardianship, conservatorship, future potential alternatives to guardianship
• Advanced directives and potential abuse of advanced directives
• Federal housing programs for elderly
• Elderly eviction notices and defenses
• Reverse mortgages and elder bankruptcy
• Elder divorce

Sample Assignments and Case Studies

Your assignments and case studies will focus around the aspects of elder law that law firms expect from trained paralegals. Sample assignments may include:

• Case studies involving elder clients with overlapping legal issues, such as housing instability combined with benefits eligibility or family conflict requiring court intervention
• Drafting basic legal documents (such as restraining order petitions or intake summaries), analyzing fact patterns, and applying relevant federal and state laws and regulations
• Hypothetical scenarios that require you to identify legal issues, determine appropriate forums, and propose client-centered strategies

“The Elder Law module was my favorite class. I really liked how the paralegal’s role was explained in every module. I enjoyed the live classrooms because, as someone who has not practiced as a paralegal, it was easier to understand the material by hearing about different cases that went along with the reading. This class has given me more direction about the kinds of jobs I would excel in in the future.”

The modules are entirely online. Students benefit from approximately two live sessions each week, with opportunities to interact with instructors in real time. To support all learners, every live session is recorded for those unable to attend.

Each module blends lecture content, videos, interactive elements, discussions, and assessments, all organized through a clear syllabus. To prevent screen fatigue, text is broken up with interactive dialogue boxes, knowledge checks, and short assignments, along with topic-based video demonstrations. Students also engage with one another on discussion boards.

The modules are designed for individual work. They offer both asynchronous flexibility and synchronous engagement. Students can study at any time that fits their schedule, while live sessions and discussion boards provide real-time interaction.

In addition to asking questions during live sessions, students can reach out to their instructors through office hours, discussion boards, and emails.
